I grew up admiring a variety of characters, from Aya in Green Lantern: The Animated Series to Zenon in Zenon: Girl of the 21st Century. Kelly Malcolm from The Lost World: Jurassic Park was one of those characters, and she continues to be a favorite of mine.
What’s not to love?
Kelly has an impressive repertoire of vocabulary. Honestly, she’s the primary reason why I know what “troglodyte” means.
Unlike the adults around her, she has the most common sense when it comes to the baby T-Rex situation. Other animals will no doubt be attracted to its sounds, so she wants to seek higher ground for protection. This effectively puts her out of harm’s way.
Last but certainly not least, her incredible gymnastic skills help save her dad from certain death. Her moves on the parallel bars still make me so proud of her character and the confidence it took for her to face the raptor without any weapons.
I still vividly remember wanting to be her when I was her age. Seeing her kick butt in style had a significant impact on my 11-year-old self. Two decades later, she’s still, without a doubt, one of the coolest characters in my eyes.
In my personal headcanon, after the events of the movie, Ian had a serious discussion with her school and ensured his queen, goddess, and inspiration got a second chance. She tried out for the gymnastics team again and she made it in. After she told him the good news, he made sure to keep his promises and never miss her competitions. She did save his life, after all.
